History
Founded in 1941 by the Metropolitan Baptist District Association of Greater Detroit, Carver Camp is an exceptionally beautiful site used as a place for family reunions, overnight stays and retreats, church events, picnicking, and day retreats for adults and children. Located in Grass Lake, Michigan, approximately ten miles east of Jackson in Jackson County, the camp is comprised of three parcels and is approximately 385 acres in size.
George Washington Carver was a famous African American botanist, agricultural researcher, and inventor from the early 20th century. His pioneering work in crop rotation, the development of the peanut and its myriad of uses, and his passion to engender more sustainable agricultural techniques to both restore crop potential and improve the condition of African American farmers after the Civil War, inspired the Metropolitan District to name the property after him. Carver was committed to excellence and was passionate about art, science, religion, and education. Carver was able to accomplish great things with very few resources and is a model for the Carver Camp.
The goal is to create a camp that exemplifies the legacy of George Washington Carver. It is the vision of the leadership team for the camp to become a place of scientific exploration through small-scale experimental agriculture. The camp is a place where children are accepted and supported, where staff members are devoted to helping the children. Carver Camp is a place for education outside the classroom, where children can learn while having fun, become responsible, and grow deeper in their relationships with God.
Primarily a children's camp, Carver Camp serves the entire family.

Our strategic plans include future plans for: a museum dedicated to George Washington Carver, a shop in the camp general store, and a petting farm. The camp farm will provide fresh food to the camp during the growing season with a hoop house to extend the season. As Carver Camp grows there are also plans to build a Chapel, multipurpose room, and health center.
Carver Camp is a 501 (c) 3 organization led by the Metropolitan Baptist District Association and supported by the generous donations of its supporters. Dr. Nathan Johnson, Moderator.
